Emergency Guides

What to do in common emergency situations

  1. 1

Stay calm and speak in a soft, reassuring voice.

  2. 2

Remind them that they took a substance and the effects are temporary.

  3. 3

Move them to a quiet, comfortable, and safe environment.

  4. 4

Reduce stimulation: dim lights, turn off loud music, remove crowds.

  5. 5

Offer water and stay with them. Do not leave them alone.

  6. 6

    Encourage slow, deep breathing.

  7. 7

Do not try to talk them out of their experience or argue with their perceptions.

  8. 8

If they are willing, guided breathing can help: 4 seconds in, 4 seconds hold, 4 seconds out.

  9. 9

Benzodiazepines can reduce the intensity if available and they consent.

  10. 10

If they become a danger to themselves or others, call emergency services.
